Hace unos momentos estuvimos viendo y escuchando en los medios de comunicación el manejo que se estaba haciendo, el manejo informativo sobre lo que estaba ocurriendo. Escuchamos a los locutores y locutoras de Televisión Azteca implorando por que entrara el orden, por que entrara el ejército a poner orden y acabar con lo que estaba ocurriendo ahí.

The EZLN has finished their consultation with their support bases, the reason for the recent Red Alert in Chiapas, deciding to increasingly foster alliances with Mexico’s oppressed peoples and nonelectoral left and support movements worldwide against neoliberalism.

On September 16th the EZLN holds a sixth meeting discussing their “Other Campaign” for non-electoral politics and a new Mexican constitution (as proposed in the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle, aka "the Sexta"). After soliciting the comments, criticisms and words of support from groups, collectives, organizations and individuals from across Mexico and beyond, the Zapatistas are to begin a series of encounters to form specific proposals on what form this “Other Campaign” will take. Here, Akane gives us a recap of the meetings held thus far.

In the past few days the EZLN has issued four communiqués declaring a state of Red Alert in autonomous zones in Chiapas as a "precautionary defensive measure." Significantly, this means that members of civil society have been asked to leave Zapatista territory as the EZLN circles the wagons in preparation for an internal consultation. The Peace House and many other groups in Chiapas are monitoring the situation for further developments. Currently, there has been no call for international human rights observers.

The community assemblies have ended, with 98% approving the undertaking of a "new political initiative". The EZLN will release a "Sixth Declaration of the Selva Lacandona" soon.
