In these recent weeks, Peace House volunteers have been able to get out of San Cristóbal for a bit, traveling with La Otra Campaña and visiting the Zapatista caracol at Oventic. As usual, we’ve invited them to share their experiences with us in this month’s newsletter. Joy writes about her time visiting a particularly strong and rebellious community in Oaxaca while following La Otra, and Krista shares her thoughts on searching for common ground and understanding as an international in the struggle for revolution in Chiapas.
Back here in San Cris, the Peace House is full of great energy, talent these days, In addition to two volunteer arrivals this past week, one of our more senior volunteers, Chris, recently returned to San Cristobal after spending three weeks working on various Hurricane Stan-related relief projects in Tapachula. Look for a piece from Chris in next month’s newsletter.
But here at home in San Cristóbal things have, unfortunately, been a little more eventful than usual. The past few weeks have been somewhat tumultuous and unnerving, as we’ve witnessed a marked increase in the harassment and intimidation of non-governmental organizations and individuals whose work is involved with the Zapatista struggle. These deplorable activities include various forms of harassment, robbery, and most recently, the arrest and incarceration of an individual directly affiliated with the Zapatista movement. More information on this latest and most blatant effort at intimidation is included in this month’s newsbriefs.
As a reader of the Chiapas Peace House newsletter, please help us to continue to spread awareness of the ongoing struggles here in Chiapas.
