Remembering Stan and the Power of Mexico's Indigenous PeoplesAs we get closer and closer to the July 2 election date, the national news seems to be increasingly filled with political bashing and rampant accusations coming from every party. “Democracy” in action is an interesting thing here in Mexico. We’ve tried to summarize the latest controversies in our monthly election update. In other news, one of our volunteers Chris recently spent a month in Tapachula where he was involved in the Hurricane Stan relief effort. In this month’s newsletter he offers a very insightful look at the causes and effects of the hurricane relief process and the parallels between the situation in Mexico and that in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. In our reflections section one of our former volunteers Andrew, offers us his thoughts on the strength and resilience of many indigenous communities here in Mexico engaged in the struggle against neo-liberalism. |
