Show Your Solidarity: Donate a Book (or ten)

Article written by Susan Schempf

One of our organizational partners, INESIN (Instituto de Estudios e Investigación Intercultural), is creating an exciting new educational program here in San Cristobal and is seeking donations of books for its library.

INESIN is an institution formed by Evangelical and Catholic Christians in Chiapas to provide a space of intercultural and interreligious exchange and dialogue and to develop processes of research and participative education within communities, churches, and general society, regardless of one's cultural, religious, historical, or socioeconomic reality. They contribute to the formation of spaces for analysis of daily life, family, religion, work and service solidarity. INESIN develops these visions from a multicultural perspective, recognizing, respecting, and valuing the cultural and religious wealth of the state of Chiapas.  INESIN develops an ecumenical (interreligious) process within communities, churches and society in general.

INESIN is composed of four departments:  Indian Theology, Gender Studies, Ecumenical Studies and Social Development.  They offer courses and workshops in these areas and are beginning a new certificate program in Ecumenical Studies.  Responding to the need for written resources for the development of participatory and liberating educational projects for students, institutes, seminarians, churches, organizations and interested individuals, INESIN has a goal of building a library of 10,000 volumes by 2010.

This project supports INESIN's mission to be a forum for theological, pastoral, social and anthropological study and research to students, pastors, church members, and society in general.  It will support the churches, communities and interested individuals in their development and training in theology, sociology, anthropology, Bible studies, ecumenism, gender, and community development. It will also contribute to the development of popular, academic and theological knowledge and social science in the state of Chiapas.

This organization is truly doing great work within communities and here in San Cristobal and we are blessed to be working in solidarity with them.  Books of all sorts are welcome, including theology, anthropology, sociology, social development, environment, education, indigenous studies, gender studies, politics, neoliberalism, economics, etc.  While spanish material is best, all languages are acceptable.  Please contact us if you would like to support grassroots education in Chiapas!
