Organizing against Dam Building in Guerrero

Article written by Colin Bossen

Resistance against Plan Puebla Panama style corporate development
continues in Guerrero where locals have successfully rallied national
interest and solidarity for their struggle to oppose the construction
of a dam at La Parota.

For several years government plans to build the
mega dam have proceeded without the input or consent of the over 71
communities and ejidos that would be flooded or negatively effected by
the construction. Locals now maintain 24 hour surveillance of the main
highway and are ready to blockade against heavy machinery and
construction materials that need to be transported to the site. A forum
earlier this month assembled over 500 people of civil society from
throughout Mexico. Their demands and plans of action were written and
delivered to government officials in Mexico City. They will continue to
organize with other effected communities throughout Mexico to protect
their rivers, lands and villages. More information: MOVIMIENTO MEXICANO DE AFECTADOS POR LAS PRESAS Y EN DEFENSA DE LOS RÍOS and medios independientes
